Extinction often feels distant, like a chapter from prehistory sealed in stone. But not all disappearances belong to ancient eras. Some unfolded within reach of cameras, field journals, even living memory. In forests, rivers, and islands that still exist today, certain creatures slipped away so recently that their absence feels unfinished. Their colors once flashed in sunlight. Their calls once threaded through air that remains unchanged. What vanished was not only biology, but presence. And the unsettling part is this: many of these endings did not happen long ago at all.
